Question on fart can car feature

Postby 68383 » Thu Sep 19, 2013 8:27 pm

Why are a lot of the customized import cars' rear wheels cockeyed? I've gotta believe it's not good for a lot of parts on a car to drive that way.

Is this a sign that I'm getting old?Image

I think they are trying to get the wide tires to fit in the wheel wells? I am sure it is great for wearing out tires and wheel bearings!

Its a new "style" movement in the import scene, usually referred to as "cambered" or "cambering" or "stanced" (which is more generic).

And yes, it absolutely wears out tires faster, causes issues with certain components, etc.
The import guys don't care, they do it anyway, just for looks. In some cases, Jeff is right, they are trying to get wider tires to fit in the wheelwells, but in most cases its just for looks. I can't see, and haven't seen anyone mention, any performance benefit from it.

And almost everyone I know who is a car guy (even my import friends!) thinks it is stupid.

I saw a Miata last weekend that the camber was so severe that you could see light under about 1.5" of the outside tread edge, the front wasn't much better.

Try being the guy that has to explain you can't properly align their car and have it look that way

Sorry, but anything that's going to cause things to wear out prematurely isn't cool in my book.

Cars like that should fail inspection!
