power steering

Postby cappy241 » Mon Jan 12, 2015 11:36 pm

i have a 69 RR 440, 4 speed with manual steering, the box is shot so would like to change over to power steering. What issues will I run into? is this an easy swap? Have seen Saginaw and Federal set ups on ebay so not sure how to go about this. Does the column have to be changed?

The Saginaw is the better of the two pumps. You're going to need a power steering column or buy the adapter that goes on the end of the steering shaft, it makes the column two inches longer to account for the shorter power steering box. I would buy a box from firmfeel.com, they have a few different flavors but you should go with the stage 2 or 3.

While you're upgrading, I'd shim the regulator valve assembly in the pump. http://www.moparaction.com/tech/beep/PU ... e-v1.4.pdf
I'm planning to do this to my Saginaw box before the wagon comes out in the spring.
That plus a nicely upgraded box from FimFeel and you'll be overjoyed with the way the car handles, or at least I'm told...

March has a kit for the shimming for about $15 from Summit. Easier than fussing with getting washers that fit.

Just about to finish the same conversion , manual to power steering.

You will need the following parts:
Power Box.
New Column. the power steering column is shorter and has a different size I.S. diameter on the coupler.
Pump and correct brackets, lines, valve.
Crank pulley. you will need to add a belt.
don't remember about the pitman arm\

can be done while the engine is in.
